In this video I show you how I made a scary clown face entrance Halloween prop for our haunted trail. This Halloween clown decoration could also be used as an entrance to a fun house, evil carnival (carnevil) or your own yard haunt.

This thing was an absolute blast to build and I have been wanting to do something like this for a few years. I’m just really happy it turned out as good as it did since I started this with absolutely no airbrush skills whatsoever. The trick is just take your time and practice to get used to your equipment.

I wanted to make this collapsible for easy storage during the off season, so it was made into 3 separate plywood and 2×4 framed panels that bolt together.

Please be sure to keep safety in mind when working with power tools (or hand tools for that matter).

Here are the materials required:

– (2) 4’ x 8’ x 1/2” sheets of plywood (on side sanded)
– (12) 2” x 4” x 8’ framing studs
– (2) 2” x 4” x 14’ framing studs
– (4) 4” bolts, nuts & washers
– A variety of different sized wood screws
– Outdoor latex primer
– Black latex paint
– Spar urethane (water-based)
– Craft paints
– Graph paper & Pencil
– Sandpaper
– Basic tools, saw, drill, paint brushes, etc.

There are a few items that would help this project along, but they are not absolutely required:

– Airbrush set with small compressor
– Air brad nail gun and compressor
– Overhead projector and transparency sheets, or a projector connected to a laptop computer

This is a quick and dirty run-down of the steps in the video:

1. Design your scary clown face. Draw it out to scale on graph paper.
2. Cut the plywood to size and frame each section. Be sure to test fit the 3 sections.
3. Prime everything with water based outdoor primer.
4. Paint the back and frame with flat black latex paint.
5. Transfer your clown from the graph paper to the front panels (canvas). An overhead projector is a huge help for this.
6. Begin painting starting with lighter colors first, then working your way darker. An airbrush is ideal for this step.
7. Once finished painting, roll on several coats of water based spar urethane. Make sure it is water based. The oil based spar urethane will turn your lighter colors yellow.
8. When setting up the clown prop, bolt the panels together. Make sure they are tight. You don’t want the top panel to fall on someone.
9. Dig a couple holes, attach long boards to the sides of the clown, burry the boards and tightly tamp them into the ground (like a fence post).
10. Attach angled braces to protect from the wind.
